Watts Coffee House: Step into an African American Hideout

Visited this place as part of weekend outing organized by my residential area. It was about 15mins away from USC, which was cool. It was a place frequented by African Americans, and I guess we felt pretty out of place because our group consisted of mostly Asian and Whites.

Nevertheless, it was very unique. Service was very slow, and the menu wasn't extensive, but it was alright. It was slightly disappointing that the waitress had to come back to us 10mins later saying that they ran out of some of the items which we had ordered. But I'm not complaining since I did not have to pay.

I forgot what I had initially ordered, but I ended up with fried chicken wings with waffle that was recommended by the residential professor who brought us out. It was lacking in every way to be honest. The poached eggs were not smooth, and the waffles were a mystery. They were just tasteless fluffy sticks. The chicken wings were too salty as well. I wish I had something else instead.

Fried Chicken Wings with Waffle ($14)

Although the food from the cafe was disappointing, the experience of visiting an African American cafe that has lasted through the years was very interesting. The pictures of the cafe speak for itself. We were also in the area to visit the Watts Tower, which was a very interesting piece of large scale art that was big enough to be a house. Might post about it next time~
